Dear friends, colleagues, and students of Perugia,

We were so sad to leave your wonderful town and University as the whole world continued to be disrupted by this deadly virus. My husband and I admired your Prime Minister's strength to close Italy, which was our message that it was time to return home. We now shelter in place in California and have been fortunate to stay well. My wishes for your health and fortitude as you weather this situation. Remember that physical isolation is not social isolation. Reach out – virtually, of course. I will return to Perugia when the situation eases so we can continue the work and friendships. I send you this greeting on Earth Day – to remember the beauty we have to look forward to in our future.

Va bene,

Carol George, Ph.D. Mills College, Oakland, California USA

Dear friends in Perugia,

The coronavirus has largely disrupted our life and become our common enemy. The coronavirus has no nationality, and so should our support for each other. Friends in Perugia (even Italy) are now experiencing a hard time combating the virus. Nevertheless, with the government and everyone doing their best and the enormous, generous support from other nations, I believe that the situation will soon become better and finally, everything will go back to normal. Be resilient and hand in.

Forza, Italia. Andrà tutto bene!

Letter of Support to the University of Perugia

Risposta del Magnifico Rettore

Dear Professor Yuanyuan,

Dear friend of the University of Perugia,

In thanking you deeply for your wonderful message of solidarity, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for your heartfelt concerns. We are, indeed, still in strong spirits and doing everything we can to ensure both the safety of the academic community and the educational activities of the University.

Great progress has been made in these regards in a very short time, a tangible proof of the resilience of the Italian people. Everybody is working toward the same goal.

Our doctors and health workers are working relentlessly, sometimes in very difficult conditions, to bravely perform their duties with admirable altruism and professionalism. We will never be able to thank them enough for their effort and for mercifully putting their lives on the line.

All courses, examinations, graduation sessions as well as the activities of the various administrative offices have been timely ensured through the use of dedicated online platforms.

In your letter you write that, in time of crisis, we need strong partners by our side. I certainly agree with your statement. Please be assured that your friendship is treasured and entirely reciprocated and that your sincere offer to help is equally much appreciated. We are proud too to have such loyal friends by our side during these difficult times.

Looking forward to meeting you in the future.

Best Regards,

The Rector

Prof. Maurizio Oliviero

Dear Maurizio,

I hope you and your family are doing well.

Indeed, basically we are all the same, want the same things and have the same enemies that are not other people.

Take care,
